Canes that emerge outside the bed should be trimmed out.įor more information on pruning and training hardy raspberries, download the publication Growing Raspberries in Wisconsin. If wider, the inner canes will not get the sunlight they need for quality fruit production. The width of the bed should be no more than 18 inches across. As your raspberry plants mature, it is recommended that you cut back the small, thin canes to leave only about 8 to 10 of the strongest ones. This is also a good time to trim canes to about 5 feet in height. Completely prune back and remove all skinny, dead, damaged, diseased or otherwise weak canes. You may notice winter injury on cane tips. Increase the rate to 25 pounds if a heavy mulch is used. Apply 20 pounds of 10-10-10 per 1,000 square feet of the planting. Bramble crops should be fertilized each year in the early spring (mid-April). This will maximize yield and fruit quality. access in the raspberry planting, prevent soil erosion and weed growth and can be easily maintained by regular mowing. In late March to April, thin the remaining canes to allow 4–5 sturdy canes per foot of row (see drawing at right). Removing these dying canes will prevent diseases and give the primocanes space to grow. Use a lopping shears and remove the floricanes at ground level (see middle drawing). They are easy to distinguish from the green primocanes. These floricanes are reddish brown and woody. Such canes have served their purpose and will die this fall. Raspberry picking season is here (see drawing at left).Īfter your last harvest, prune out the canes that bore fruit. A second year cane is called a floricane. In its second year the cane will bloom, bear fruit in summer, and then die. New canes will emerge from the ground in the spring. Use a mower, sharp lopper, or hedge trimmer. Simply cut the canes to the ground each year in the late fall or early spring when they are dormant. The first year it develops into a green cane called a primocane. Pruning A major advantage of primocane-fruiting raspberries is how easy they are to prune. Here’s how:Īn individual raspberry cane lives for only two years. Raspberries must be pruned every year to produce good yields of high quality fruit.Īlmost all raspberries grown in North Dakota are summer-bearing red raspberries grown in a narrow hedgerow.
